CHAPTER 22

MATEO

She’s full of secrets, but whether she’ll trust us enough to tell us what’s going on, I can’t predict. She’s a walking contradiction. It’s obvious Marcos trusted her to some degree, or he wouldn’t have sent her to get the file from SEI nor would he have left her something in his will. Yet she has done nothing but lie and deceive us since we met her.

Does she work for CJ Tech? Or did Marcos instruct her to say that to us? If she located the file, why didn’t she take it from the server? Does she know what’s on the file, or is she simply doing what she’s told? Philip Carlton manages our IT department for a reason. He’s well qualified and extremely tech knowledgeable. If “Samantha” impressed him enough to break protocol and request her immediate hire, she’s skilled. How much? I don’t know, but maybe if I get her to show me what she did in the garage, I can start to put a framework around it.

After she fell asleep on the couch last night, I carried her to the bedroom we’d assigned to her. She must have been exhausted, because she didn’t even twitch. I debated removing some of her clothes to make her more comfortable, but she looked so peaceful, I just covered her and left.

Thiago returned in a worse mood than he left. Diego ghosted him. I wish he’d found him and delivered the beating he deserves, but I can’t say I’m unhappy with this turn of events. When we were children, Diego was a monster, tormenting everyone weaker than him. He delighted in it. When I tried to explain to Thiago why I didn’t like him, he went to the “alleged” victims, but none would tattle on Diego. Some even joked about it until it seemed like I was exaggerating his behavior.

Grayson never saw or heard him do anything, but he knew I wouldn’t accuse someone without reason. He had a little chat with Diego, and whatever he said to him worked. He stopped hurting the kids in our neighborhood.

Yawning, I walk into the kitchen and find Thiago and Grayson up, dressed and working at the kitchen table. I shake my head. Their most productive hours are early morning, while mine are late at night. Thankfully, they gave up making me see the light of dawn a long time ago.

“Coffee? Food?” I practically growl the words.

Grayson points to the counter, where a breakfast buffet is laid out. Fruit, bagels, pastries, cereal, and two boxes of coffee with the words ‘Mimosas in Miami’ emblazoned on the box. A popular breakfast spot not far from here.

Shuffling over to the smorgasbord, I grab a paper cup and fill it to the top with the delicious, dark brew. Then I pile everything but the cereal on a plate and make my way to the table. All I do for the next fifteen minutes is eat and drink coffee. I don’t contemplate world problems or even peek at my laptop.
